Dead dogs keep showing up in cemetery
Authorities are investigating the discovery of at least dead dogs -- some obviously mutilated or even decapitated -- in a rural Jackson County cemetery.
Caretakers at Floral Hills Cemetery have called the Jackson County Sheriff's Office several times over the past six months to report that the corpses had been found on the property, the sheriff's office announced today.
Each time deputies responded, they found that the dead dogs had been left in different areas of the cemetery, which is in the 25200 block of east U.S. 50, east of Lee's Summit, according to Sgt. Ronda Montgomery.
The sheriff's office is working with Kansas City authorities to determine whether the mutilations are related to others reported in the area.
On Tuesday, the body of what appeared to be a decapitated 4-year-old collie-shepherd mix was found in a driveway at 42nd Street and Gillham Road in midtown Kansas City. Last summer, someone mutilated two dogs by cutting off their hind legs.
In the Jackson County case, the dogs were of various breeds. Some showed no visible signs of injury but others were mutilated, Montgomery said.
Montgomery said investigators have spoken with a person of interest but have no suspects in the case. Anyone who has seen suspicious activity or has any information is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS or the sheriff's department at 816-524-4302.
