Cortino accepted into Magic Circle
Nineteen-year-old Hickory magician Sammy Cortino has been accepted into London's Magic Circle.The Magic Circle's 14 member council based Cortino's membership in the 1,500 member organization on an examination and screening process.

10th annual Art in the Shop
Art in the Shop seeks artists interested in showing at the 10th annual Art in the Shop, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 4, 274 Bobby Godfrey Lane in Taylorsville. The area is a fairly level grassy six-acre area with plenty of free customer parking.
The show includes artwork of all varieties, but features folk and outsider artists. Also included will be bonsai, sculpture, paintings, photography, jewelry, pottery, garden art and more. Only quality artwork and fine crafts are accepted.
Booth space is $40 for a 10-by-10-foot space. All artwork must be original in design; absolutely no kits accepted.
Art in the Shop also seeks persons or organizations interested in volunteering and sponsoring the music stage. Music stage sponsors will be promoted.
A raffle will benefit Full Circle Arts, a Hickory area not-for-profit artist cooperative.

Hickory Alive 2008 lineup
The Hickory Jaycees and the Hickory Downtown Development Association have announced the Hickory Alive lineup for the 2008 season. The free event is held every Friday night in June and July on Union Square in downtown Hickory and features local and regional musical talent. A talent preshow begins at 7 p.m. with the main act running 8-11 p.m. Details can be found at www.hickoryjaycee.com.This year's band lineup is as follows:

Poetry contest for grades K-12
The Maiden branch of Catawba County Library System will sponsor a poetry contest for grades K-12 next month.
Poems must be original works about nature. Entries should be legible, including the writer's name, age, grade and telephone number. Entries may be submitted April 1-17.
Children and youths are invited to read their poems at 3:30 p.m. April 17 at the Maiden Branch. All entries will be judged on April 18 when book-related prizes will be awarded.

Art in Furniture Design exhibit
The Caldwell Arts Council will feature the work of furniture crafts persons and mass production furniture designers on display April 4-25. The public is invited to meet the artists at the free opening reception from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on April 4.Art in Furniture Design presents work by Kern Maass and Appalachian State University students, as well as Doug Sigler, Cary Stevens and Zagaroli and Company.
Maass heads the industrial design program at ASU. His work has been featured in shows and exhibitions throughout the country, including SOFA Chicago, Fine Furnishings Providence and the American Craft Museum's Horizon Award. In addition to his own work, Maass brings the work of students pursuing the degree of bachelor of science in industrial design.
Sigler has been a home builder and furniture designer for more than 40 years and has taught at Buffalo State College and Penland School of Crafts.
Stevens, of Winston-Salem, uses odd and old items that she finds at yard sales, estate sales and junk shops in creating her furniture designs.
Zagaroli and Company creates designs for furniture manufacturers in the Western North Carolina area and includes three designers and an engineer, David Zagaroli, Charlie Zagaroli, Steve Brooks and Joe Miller.
Art in Furniture Design will also display drawings from a designer's working design process.

`Stopping Time' joint exhibition
'Stopping Time: The Art and Science of Doc Edgerton's Life Work,' a joint exhibition hosted by Hickory Museum of Art and Catawba Science Center, opened March 22 at both the Hickory Museum of Art and the Catawba Science Center.
The exhibit explores the work of educator, engineer, inventor and photographer Harold Edgerton through almost 100 high-speed photographs, interactives, demonstrations and special programs.
