Visual Journalism Accolades: Observer takes 5 awards in design
The Observer earned one Silver award and four awards of excellence in the Society for News Design's 29th annual competition. There were 4,818 entries submitted from 343 countries, and 1,166 winners named.
Winning a Silver award in the photography category for the coverage of the opening of the Billy Graham library were Todd Sumlin, photographer; Leslie Wilkinson, design team leader; Bert Fox, director of photography; and Barbara Russell, copy editor.
In the business news design category, Luke Trautwein won an award of excellence for a MoneyWise cover titled 'It's a Digital Life.' Trautwein and Wendy Yang, photo editor, earned another award of excellence in the same category for a page titled 'I Love You.'
In the entertainment design category, the Observer earned two awards of excellence for E&T covers: one titled 'Take Cover' by designer Jason Benavides, entertainment editor Theoden Janes and copy editor Chip Wilson; and the second titled 'I Am Legend' by Benavides and Janes.
Since 1994, the Observer has earned 117 SND awards including one Gold, seven Silvers and one Bronze.
