Local business briefs: St. Luke's estate gift; 401(k) overseer sought
St. Luke's estate gift
The St. Luke's Hospital Foundation has received a $3.6 million estate gift that will go toward research at St. Luke's Cancer Institute.
Caroline Millard, spokeswoman for St. Luke's Hospital Foundation, said the bequest came from the estate of Dorothea and Presley W. Pitts, who lived in Liberty for many years before moving to Florida in 1978.
Millard said the bequest was the largest estate gift ever designated for the cancer institute.
401(k) overseer sought
The U.S. Department of Labor has asked a federal judge to appoint an independent fiduciary to oversee the abandoned 401(k) plan of a now-defunct Overland Park technology consulting company.
Professional Resources Inc. shut down in 2002, leaving the plan's 15 participants unable to access their accounts. The plan had $45,000 in assets at the time, the Department of Labor said.
Birch deal done
Access Integrated Networks Inc. said Wednesday that it had completed the purchase of Birch Telecom Inc.
The combined company will have its headquarters in Atlanta but maintain operations in Kansas City. It has about 400 employees, annual sales of $200 million, and serves about 100,000 small- and medium-sized business customers.
O'Reilly outlook
Auto parts retailer O'Reilly Automotive Inc. said Wednesday in a conference call that it expected earnings per share of $1.84 to $1.88 per share for all of 2008
Late Tuesday, O'Reilly reported fourth-quarter earnings of $40.6 million, up 0.6 percent from $40.4 million for the same period in 2006. Diluted earnings per common share were even at 35 cents on 116.3 million shares, compared with 35 cents a year ago on 115.4 million shares.
'Black book' additions
The Missouri Gaming Commission Wednesday barred reputed Kansas City mobster Peter Joseph Ribaste from the state's riverboat casinos. The commission also added the 22 people blacklisted by the Illinois Gaming Board to its so called 'black book.'
Ribaste, 53, has long been associated with Kansas City mob figures and was barred from Nevada's casinos in 1999. He was convicted of mail fraud in 1989 and tax evasion in 1998.
