Boy, 15, injured when bicycle hits school bus
A 15-year-old boy was critically injured in Eastern Garrard County on Friday when his bicycle hit a school bus.
The bus was traveling west on Walker Pike through the intersection of Good Hope Road about 4:30 p.m. The boy was turning from Good Hope Road onto Walker Pike when his bicycle hit the bus near the back of the vehicle on the driver's side, Kentucky State Police said.
Neighbors identified the boy as Charlie Snapp of Paint Lick. He was treated on scene and then flown to the University of Kentucky Hospital. He was listed in critical condition Friday night.
The driver of the bus, Robert Hammons, 63, of Lancaster, was not injured. There were no passengers on the bus. No charges were filed.
Curt Isaacs, a neighbor, said he heard Charlie's collision with the bus and rushed to the scene.
'I told him to lay down and asked if he was all right,' he said, 'and he held up his hand.'
Isaacs said Charlie could not feel his legs and his shoulder, and the right side of his face was injured.
Moments after the collision, Charlie's mother called him on his cell phone. Snapp was able to answer the phone, and he told his mother he was all right, Isaacs said. He said Charlie was still conscious when the ambulance took him to the hospital.
Charlie routinely rides his bicycle to pick up his little brother at a neighbor's house after school, Isaacs said.
'It could have been a lot worse if his little brother had been with him,' Isaacs said.
