Iraq official: U.S. bases can't stay
Iraq will never allow the U.S. to keep permanent military bases on its soil, said the country's national security adviser, Mowaffaq al-Rubaie. "Permanent forces or bases in Iraq for any foreign forces is a red line that cannot be accepted by any nationalist Iraqi," he told Dubai-based Al-Arabiya television.
China vows U.S. product safety
Beijing agreed to tighten controls on products shipped to the U.S. after several high-profile recalls, most notably involving lead paint on toys. The talks with U.S. officials also exposed tensions with China, which blames the product problems on poor U.S. designs. Chinese Vice Premier Wu Yi acknowledged a "very heated discussion."
* PERU: Former President Alberto Fujimori, 69, was sentenced to 6 years in prison for ordering death squads to kill suspected leftists in '91 and '92. In one incident, 10 were kidnapped from a university and killed. In another, 8 people, including an 8-year-old boy, were gunned down at a family barbecue.
