JumpTV posts deeper loss of US$58.7M after $48.1M goodwill writedown

- Internet broadcaster JumpTV Inc. (TSX:JTV) reported that its first-quarter net loss swelled to US$58.7 million from $7.1 million a year earlier as it logged a $48.1-million non-cash goodwill impairment charge. The company, reporting in U.S. dollars, said Wednesday that its revenue was $3.6 million for the period ended March 31, up from $1 million a year earlier, mostly from the acquisition of the broadband division of XOS Technologies Inc. and Cycling TV. Subscribers climbed 273 per cent year-over-year to 82,000, mostly from the acquisitions. The quarterly net loss was worth $1.19 per share, compared with 18 cents per share a year ago. The company noted that its first-quarter revenue was down from $4.8 million in the fourth quarter and its subscriber count declined from 85,000 in the fourth quarter because of the seasonality of its sports offerings and a shift to more free-to-consumer offerings in the United States. The company had $39.8 million in cash and equivalents at March 31, and its main priority is to reduce its cash burn, stated chief executive Jordan Banks. "We expect to make significant headway toward this priority within the next 45 days," Banks said "Now that we have begun the transitional period of the business in the second quarter, we are confident we will see the fruits of our labour in the third and fourth quarters as we move toward a cash break-even position."
