Nurses and hospital workers launch rights campaign for patients
- Unions representing health care workers have started a campaign to make Canadians more aware of their rights under the medicare system.
Medically necessary health services are paid for by governments across the country, but patients are sometimes charged for such services. Canadian Union of Public Employees national president Paul Moist says charging for the services covered under the Canada Health Act isn't just morally wrong - it's illegal.
But Moist says the Harper government is undermining medicare by not enforcing the Act.
Linda Silas of the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions says the fight against private payment for medically necessary care is part of a bigger fight to maintain non-profit, high quality, accessible health care for all.
The groups have launched a website (www.yourmedicarerights.ca) and produced a pamphlet to inform the public of their medicare rights.
