Alberta Green party boss boasts a 'legitimate shot' at 2 legislature seats
- The leader of the Alberta Greens is boldly predicting his low-budget party has momentum and a "legitimate shot" at winning at least two seats in the coming provincial election.
George Read says the Green party has grown exponentially since its birth in 1990 and will definitely increase its support in the March 3 election.
He says two star candidates in the rural ridings of Lacombe-Ponoka and Drayton Valley-Calmar could potentially become Canada's first Green members of the legislature.
The party is holding campaign schools in Edmonton and Calgary this weekend and hopes to field candidates in over 56 of the 83 ridings across Alberta.
And while there are Green candidates in every Calgary riding, Read says his party's popularity is strongest in the rural areas where concerns over land, air and water quality are paramount.
Read says while critics have accused his party of being both left and right on the political spectrum, policy decisions are based on what makes sense for long-term sustainability.
