N.Y. Congressman Arrested On DWI Charges
Staten Island and Brooklyn Rep. Vito J. Fossella was arrested in Virginia overnight on drunk driving charges, police confirmed to CBS 2.
The arrest took place in Alexandria.
Early Thursday evening, Fossella issued a statement regarding the arrest, acknowledging and apologizing for his actions:
"Last night I made an error in judgment. As a parent, I know that taking even one drink of alcohol before getting behind the wheel of a car is wrong. I apologize to my family and the constituents of the 13th Congressional District for embarrassing them, as well as myself."
Details surrounding arrest have not yet been released, but Fossella is facing re-election this year and the charges could certainly affect his future.
He's due back in court on May 12.
Fossella was elected to Congress in 1997 and serves as a member of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.
