27 Students Caught In Antioch Truancy Sweep
Antioch police cited 27 students for allegedly skipping school Thursday during a five-hour truancy sweep, Sgt. Mitch Schwitters reported Monday.
Antioch police officers paired with Contra Costa County Probation Department officers and began picking up children and teens who were supposed to be in school at 8 a.m. The sweep continued until 1 p.m., Schwitters said.
The program is designed to keep school-aged children in school and off the streets during school hours. Statistical data reportedly shows that children who cut school are more likely to engage in daytime criminal behavior and are more likely to drop out of school, police reported.
Personnel from the Child Welfare Department, the Antioch Unified School District's attendance office and REACH Project, Inc., a youth intervention program that has contracted with the city to provide alcohol and drug treatment, counseling and other services to Antioch youth, processed and counseled the alleged truants.
