Silver Plume Man Accused Of Killing Dog Wants Deal
A man from Silver Plume is hoping to get a plea deal with prosecutors on charges he killed his own dog by stabbing, then hanging it. Thomas Burback faces charges of aggravated cruelty to animals.
Burback was in a Georgetown court Wednesday to offer his plea deal.
He told police the animal bit him in the face before he killed it. The dog was found with puncture wounds and a rope around its neck along Clear Creek in Idaho Springs last month.
"(Burback) said he was raised on a farm and what they do on a farm is when a dog bites them they kill the dog," said Det. Brian Radulovich with Idaho Springs police.
One witness told police Burback hung the dog because the knife was not sharp enough. Another said he provoked the animal before being bitten.
A member of the Clear Creek Animal Rescue League was in court Wednesday.
"Animals trust their owners and I wonder how much this dog was trusting this owner as he put a rope around his neck," said Lisa Altenbernd.
Prosecutors would not say what the terms of the plea deal offer are. Burback is due back in court next month.
He did not want to speak with CBS4 after court Wednesday.
