Things are fairly calm this Friday afternoon as market watchers wrap things up ahead of the holiday weekend.

The Dow closed up 33 points or 0.3% while the S&P gained 0.1% to 1320 and the We've come to treat the HSBC flash estimate of China's monthly manufacturing PMI as an important global economic indicator, with yesterday's result showing a fall to 48.7 in May from 49.3 in April.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 33.60 points to 12,529.75. However, the Nasdaq Composite Index fell 10.74 points to 2,839.38 and the S&P 500 Stock Index added 1.82 points to 1,320.68. Initial claims for jobless benefits fell 2,000 to 370,000 in the past week.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average is up 8 points, or 0.1%, as investors appear somewhat ambivalent to gains out of the euro zone and a minor drop in weekly jobless claims.
