Stocks Mixed On Retailers, Unemployment Reports

Stocks fluctuated Thursday as investors weighed mixed sales figures from major retailers and a drop in unemployment claims.

The Labor Department said initial claims for unemployment benefits fell by 53,000 to 357,000 last week, a better-than-expected reading. Still, the four-week average of claims, which helps the market look past week-to-week volatility, rose last week to 378,250, a two-and-a-half-year high.

Because of the shaky economy, retailers have been hurting. Limited Brands Inc., Gap Inc., J.C. Penney Co., Kohl's Corp., Saks Inc. and Nordstrom Inc. all reported drops in March sales on Thursday. The news came a day after home furnishings retailer Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. warned its first-quarter profit would come in below the average analyst estimate. Read more

Dillard's, investment group reach accord on 4 director seats

“The Class B board members are committed to working with the new Class A board members to ensure that the best operating plan and management team possible are in place”

Dillard's Inc. and an investor group that has been critical of the way the department store chain has been run have reached an agreement on a slate of four proposed directors.

New York-based Barington Capital Group LP and its affiliate, Clinton Group Inc., own 5.4 percent of Dillard's shares. The hedge funds have demanded a look at Dillard's books and nominated four people for seats on Dillard's board, including Barington chief James Mitarotonda.

On Tuesday after the bell, Dillard's issued a news release saying it will nominate one director favored by Barington and that the sides reached an agreement on the three other seats. The release said the agreement was reached in conjunction with Southeastern Asset Management. Read more
