Older generation to showcase talent in finals of 'Senior Idol' competition

They may not be going to Hollywood, but for senior citizens across South Florida, Holy Cross Hospital's 'Senior Idol' is the next best thing.
'I have to sing. It's part of my life,' said finalist Nan Houston Stenzi, 84, of Boca Raton. 'I'm only alive when I sing.'
The competition, which began in 2006, is open to South Floridians age 65 and older. Contestants must be solo singers and are judged on vocal talent, style and stage presence. In March, for the third straight year, more than 100 people showed up for auditions. Judges narrowed the field to 12 people who will perform May 13 at Parker Playhouse in Fort Lauderdale. Read more

Florida Legislature set to bar dumping of treated sewage into ocean
“This sewage is treated to the lowest possible standard under Florida law. It's a practice that just isn't proper.”
South Florida may soon face a deadline to stop dumping treated sewage into the ocean, and local residents could face higher bills to pay for improved water treatment.
One legislator predicts a 'massive increase' in sewer rates, and the city of Hollywood estimates monthly bills eventually could rise by as much as $90.
The Florida Senate on Wednesday voted unanimously to end the use of sewage outfall pipes by 2025, and the House is expected to follow suit before the legislative session adjourns May 2. Read more

Gina Anchors sits nearby when her kids are at soccer practice. When her daughter, Randi, took karate, the Loxahatchee mother of two watched the lessons through a window.
Given frequent reports of teachers, coaches, and even church and Scout leaders being arrested and charged with molesting children, parents like Anchors say they can't afford to let their guard down.
The latest incident occurred Monday, when authorities charged piano teacher David Layman with fondling a 7-year-old Weston boy during a lesson at the child's home. The well liked instructor also teaches at Imagine Charter School in Weston and the Arts Academy of Hollywood. Read more

Muslim group hosts barbecue in Hollywood park to promote understanding

Once Sofian Abdelaziz Zakkout gets going on the subject of bridging gaps between South Florida Muslims and other community groups, it's apt to be a long conversation.
Zakkout, who heads the Miami Beach -based American Muslim Association of North America, is passionate about bringing together Muslims and non-Muslims.
So when the 50-year-old Palestinian immigrant planned the organization's third annual festival and barbecue, he decided it should be held not at a mosque or Islamic center as in previous years, but at a public park where members of all faiths and groups would feel welcome. Read more
