FTC asked to consider GMP's renewable claims

Did Vermont's largest electric utility make misleading claims about the renewable energy it produces? Green Mountain Power has invested heavily in renewable energy production in recent years -- including a wind farm in Lowell and numerous solar installations. A petition filed by four environmentalists claims GMP is deceiving customers by selling energy credits for that power to out-of-state utilities.

The Federal Trade Commission is being asked to determine if Vermont's largest electric utility is making deceptive claims about the renewable energy it produces. A petition filed by four environmentalists claims Green Mountain Power is asserting its customers are using electricity from renewable sources when the utility sells the rights to that claim.

Vermont sunflowers to help provide power

Beautiful fields of sunflowers growing in Newbury and Shaftsbury will have an unusual future: the flowers' seeds will be converted to biodiesel and livestock feed. The fuel will be used in Green Mountain Power's fleet of vehicles and for building heating, saving GMP's customers money and reducing greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants.

Vermont Chamber of Commerce names Stephen Terry Citizen of the Year

The Vermont Chamber of Commerce announced Thursday the selection of Stephen C. Terry as its 2014 Citizen of the Year. Mr. Terry's contributions to Vermont will be celebrated at an awards dinner on Thursday, Nov. 13, in the Grand Maple Ballroom at the University of Vermont's Davis Center.

Strong Winds Cause Isolated Outages

Gusty winds knocked out power to some utility customers early Thursday morning. As of 8 a.m., more than 200 NYSEG customers were without power in Essex County, New York.

Vermont Utility to Develop New Grid Technology

Green Mountain Power has formed an alliance with NRG Energy to build micro-grids that will take the state 'beyond the legacy grid system' Work on a future solar electric facility is currently underway at this site in Rutland, Vermont. The facility will eventually include 7,700 photovoltaic panels with a generating capacity of 2 megawatts.

Green Mountain Power warns of phone scam

Green Mountain Power says several of its customers have received phone calls from people saying they are associated with the utility and threatening immediate disconnection of service if the customer doesn't pay past due accounts. The callers have told residential and commercial customers to release credit card information to pay or use a money card, most often a Green Dot MoneyPak Card.

In trading on Wednesday, shares of GMP Capital's Cumulative 5-Year Rate Reset Preferred Shares, Series B were yielding above the 7% mark based on its quarterly dividend , with shares changing hands as low as $19.50 on the day.
