Progressive people are compassionate
My heart goes out to the former DuPont employee who has been unemployed for two years. While I empathize with his frustration, I find his reasoning for the situation to be ironic and misplaced. He cites 'progressives' like CEO Ellen Kullman as behind the difficulty in his finding work. Progressivism began in the late 19th century as a reaction to the unbridled capitalism of industrialists such as Rockefeller, Carnegie, Vanderbilt and, yes, the du Ponts. While these people did much to bring the United States to its eventual position atop the industrialized world, they cared little about the working conditions of the common laborers who toiled long, often-dangerous hours in their mines and mills, on their railroads and shipping lines. Laissez-faire capitalism led to monopolies, terrible working conditions for many laborers and a society that found the bulk of the country's wealth concentrated in a minute percentage of its people. These conditions contributed significantly to the financial crash of 1929 and the prolonged depression that followed. If you lost your job during that early period of the unfettered free market, none of those early industrialists spent a minute of their time or penny of their money helping you find another. It is the exigencies of the free market that cause contemporary companies like DuPont to 'downsize,' 'outsource' or 'go where the growth is.' To the extent there is some humanity in the present day that leads to companies trying to help displaced workers can be traced to Progressive ideals. The letter-writer cannot have it both ways. Rosa Jenkins' grandkids run her ragged. If she isn't keeping 3-year-old Saniyah Harrison from pasting stickers of fairies on her furniture, Jenkins is busy chasing after 1-year-old William Harrison, who is sure to leave a trail of crumbs through her East Side home. But the 54-year-old grandmother said she wouldn't have it any other way. Just two months ago, the children were pulled out of a burning Wilmington home -- one in cardiac arrest, the second in respiratory arrest. Emergency crews worked on the children's almost lifeless bodies in front of horrified neighbors before rushing them to the hospital. 'To remember them from the way they were in the hospital to the way they are now, is just magnificent,' said Jenkins, their paternal grandmother. 'I am truly thankful and truly, truly blessed. God has done his miracle.' When firefighters pulled the children from the second floor of their row house in the 1100 block of Pleasant St. in Wilmington's Hilltop Neighborhood, neither child had significant burns, but the two suffered severe smoke inhalation. Saniyah was in respiratory arrest at the fire scene, while William had gone into cardiac arrest. Smoke inhalation can cause a combination of injuries, including burns to the throat and lungs and chemical poisoning. Because smoke particles can block oxygen to cells and tissues, there are sometimes serious and permanent neurological effects. Others in the home were able to get out safely. The Wilmington Fire Marshal's Office ruled the blaze accidental, citing an electrical malfunction. The children were taken to Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Rockland. The boy was later transferred to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in critical condition. Saniyah, who was in serious but stable condition, remained at duPont hospital. 'It was very traumatic,' said Lawshawn Harrison, the children's mother. 'That is something that no one would ever imagine would happen to them.' Harrison said she wondered how the family would pull through the fire after losing her home and with her two children in the hospital. 'I couldn't believe it,' she said. 'It was like my whole world stopped.' About that time, her neighbors stepped in. Delaware Supermarkets Inc. held a one-day fundraiser for the Harrison family. The company operates three ShopRite stores in northern New Castle County, including the one where the children's mother works as a cashier. Bliss Elements Salon and Spa collected toys and clothes. 'It's been overwhelming,' Harrison said. 'There's been so many people from so many places that have reached out that have wanted to help us and follow our progress. It's been wonderful that there are so many good people out there that are willing to help strangers.' The acts restore Jenkins' faith in people. 'I'm just so thankful for close friends, good friends, family members and the community,' Jenkins said, adding that the help enriched her and her family at a time when bad news is in abundance. 'It lets everyone know that there are really good people out there that don't have a problem with sharing and giving, and it's wonderful.' 'When you look at the paper, there is so much violence and things like that,' she said. 'But it's really good to know that there are still and always will be good people, and that's wonderful.' On Wednesday, the children sat on a swing in an A.I. duPont Hospital for Children therapy room. As the swing gently moved, occupational therapists Sara Burton and Shannon White watched over the children, encouraging them to play with toys they had on their swing. Therapists there are working with the children to help improve their motor skills, speech, balance and other functions. The exercise checked on their balance, coordination, strength and problem-solving. 'She's been doing awesome,' said Burton, Saniyah's therapist. 'She's been making a lot of progress in every area that we've been working on.' Though Saniyah had motor-skill issues when she began therapy, Burton said, it was not severe. 'She really has done great.' William also has made great improvement, said White, his therapist. 'We've been working a lot on all types of developmental play,' she said. This includes eye-motor coordination and following directions as well as working with William's listening ability and language skills. When William arrived at the hospital, he did not seem as stable on his feet and his fine-motor skills were a little delayed. The play therapy has helped. 'We're just trying to get him back to where he was before,' White said. 'He's really come a long way.' Hospital officials wouldn't say whether the two would fully recover or how long it would take. To family members and people who may run into them, the children seem to be as fine as any child their age. When the children first got out of the hospital, they were quiet and reserved, Jenkins said -- but not so now, as William insisted on running a hand-held vacuum over the crumbs he'd dropped and Saniyah offered a chocolate-covered doughnut. 'But now they are full speed ahead,' Jenkins said, smiling and looking at her grandchildren. 'And I'm ecstatic. Ecstatic.'
