Central Pacific Financial said Thursday that first-quarter earnings rose 191% from a year earlier, to $13.5 million, as it reduced nonperforming assets and decreased the amount of chargeoffs.

Central Pacific Financial Corp. reported a first quarter profit of $13.5 million, or 32 cents per diluted share, compared to a profit of $4.6 million, or $4.58 per diluted share, during the first quarter of 2011.

Central Pacific Financial Corp. gained 2 percent on a mixed day of trading for Hawaii stocks and the broader markets.

The Hawaii Senate has confirmed the appointments of six of Gov. Neil Abercrombie 's nominees to the University of Hawaii Board of Regents.
