Gulf island's isolation inspired Mississippi artist

In 1947 a 42-year-old Mississippi artist named Walter Inglis Anderson left his wife's family plantation, moved into a cottage at his brother's pottery and began studying nature with monkish, Thoreauish intensity.

For the next 18 years, until he died from lung cancer, he turned an island 12 miles off the Gulf Coast into an outdoor studio. He slept under his rowboat, crawled through lagoons and painted wildlife wildly.

''Everything I See Is New & Strange,'' an exhibit of 59 Andersons at Ursinus College's Berman Museum, is humid with this juicy, crazy wonder.
