Tougaloo College is starting an 18-month commemoration of the civil rights movement, 50 years after it helped reshape the American political and social landscape.

Just shy of the 50th anniversary of the May 28, 1963 Jackson, Miss., Woolworth sit-in, author Michael O'Brien discussed his book We Shall Not Be Moved: The Jackson Woolworth's Sit-in and the Movement It Inspired with about 40 guests at the Sherwood Regional Library Tuesday evening.

Dr. Arvarh Strickland was more than an academic figure. He was a groundbreaker, a mentor, a coach and a friend.
