When a student graduates from college , it marks a major accomplishment - the culmination of semesters' worth of reading, writing, studying, and test-taking. But the preparation and legwork isn't over - for student loan borrowers, leaving school also starts the countdown to repayment.

The Deer Head Inn in conjunction with Antelao Restaurant is hosting the annual Ralph Hughes Memorial Scholarship Fundraiser at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Deer Head Inn.

A Manchester Township High School senior was recognized for her academic work, having been named as a "Mayors' Scholar" for 2012 through a proclamation made by Mayor Michael Fressola.A Lauren Beck was honored in front of the Township Council Monday evening.

Dr. Karol Weaver, associate professor of history at Susquehanna University, will speak at a 7 p.m. meeting Thursday at Northumberland County Historical Society, 1150 N. Chowka, a junior at Susquehanna University, studied political science through Lutheran College Washington Semester in Washington, D.C. Chowka is majoring in political science at Susquehanna and is a 2009 graduate of Shamokin Area High School.
