Cpl. Keaton G. Coffey was just weeks away from a new chapter of his life. The gifts had been registered at Bed, Bath & Beyond, and the invitations had been sent: In July, the 22-year-old planned to marry Brittany Dygert, a local hair stylist whom he met through his mother.

Tales from the Grubby End: Woodward and Martin - Two women who helped save a college

   In the years I've been researching local history, I've never encountered two more remarkable community visionaries than Amanda Woodward and Evangeline Martin.    Some of us have some knowledge of their historic connections to George Fox University, but how many know the details of their help in funding construction of the gorgeous Wood-Mar Hall in 1910-1911? And what did the new campus building, named for them with an ingenious combining of their last names, mean at the time to the struggling Quaker college?   In 1911, when 35-year-old Levi Pennington was chosen to replace acting President William Reagan, the outgoing administrator warned the new president the job would not be easy.

George Fox students head to Africa for month of service

   Teaming up with Adventures in Missions (AIM), George Fox University sent this week a collection of 17 staff and students to Swaziland as part of the university's annual May Serve program.      The group from George Fox departed Monday and will work with missionaries and Swaziland nationals to assist with various projects through June 1.
