I have read the book and saw the movie. As a teacher, I have also encountered black girls who seem to also have no hope. I was raised by a single mother . There were five children. We ate free lunch, but our mother motivated us to do something with our lives. As of today, all of my brothers and sisters are successful and we have comfortable lives. I try to instill in the students that I work with that it doesn't matter where you come from but where you are going. I thank Sapphire for writing this book. This story needed to be told.
