House GOP tries to call up pre-abortion ultrasound bill

“We will begin hearing Senate bills next week”

House Republicans, fresh off their frustration over what they considered snubs in the budget, tried to force House Democratic leaders to call up a Senate bill that would require a woman to have an ultrasound before having an abortion.

Rep. Joe Fischer, R-Fort Thomas, tried to use a procedural measure called a discharge petition -- signed Wednesday night by more than 20 others -- to try to pry the bill from the House Judiciary Committee where it has been sitting since Feb. 12.

But the measure, which requires 51 votes to pass, got 40 votes. Sixteen lawmakers voted against the measure. Read more

Here are the pro-family bills:

Senate Bill 40 - The Ultrasound Pro-Life Bill: This bill: 1) mandates that an abortion-seeking woman be given the opportunity to see the abortionist's ultrasound image of the unborn child; 2) bans partial-birth abortion; and 3) requires face-to-face consultation with the physician (rather than a taped recording). It has already passed the full Senate (32-4). It only has to pass the House to become law. THIS WILL SAVE THE LIVES OF UNBORN CHILDREN! AND, it will protect women from unbearable pain in later life.(As many as 50% of women who see their unborn child in an ultrasound choose life!)

Senate Bill 112 - Legislation Barring the Creation of "Partner" Benefits: This bill bans state universities and state agencies from creating "domestic partner" benefits and it has passed the full Senate (34-3). This is the "carry-over" issue from last year's General Assembly and now it only has to pass the House to become law. UK and U of L continue to defy the 2004 Marriage Protection Amendment and to discriminate against family members of employees while covering live-in lovers and roommates.

Senate Bill 63 - The Public Decency Act: This bill simply bans total nudity at strip bars and the touching of strip bar performers by patrons.

House Bill 397 - Scholarships for Special Needs Students: This bill would allow parents to use some of the money spent on the public education of their child that has special needs, to be used in a school of their choosing, including private schools.

House Bill 578 - Charter Schools: This bill would allow Kentucky School Boards to close failing schools and open charter schools, which are run with less red tape, and more freedom for the school administrator in setting up curriculum and hiring and firing. 40 states already have charter schools.

Because each of these bills are in the House, call the legislative message line NOW at 1-800-372-7181 to leave a message for your representation in KY to support these family issues.
