Old hurts, new lives emerge two decades after Dann shootings

“No one knew what to say or do - so it just became easier to step away”

It has been 20 years since Laurie Dann terrorized Winnetka with poison, flames and deadly gunfire - a one-day spree whose effects still resonate far beyond the exclusive North Shore community where it began. via WGN-TV Chicago

I'll ignore that to say let us memorialize Nicholas Corwin by increasing our vigilance in ridding society of guns that are so easily obtained.

Dann got away with a lot previous infractions since she was protected by her family at every turn.

The parents and their daughter are 100% to blame. No one else.

It was a very sad day. Especially for Nicholas's parents.

The gun wasn't the problem. This witch had a history of mental illness that society was eager to tolerate, even after she stabbed her husband while he slept.

Absolutely!
THIS is the REAL story behind this tragedy. And shame on the Tribune and the reporters for not delving into how evidence was destroyed and the parents stonewalled the investigation. Why weren't her parents interviewed for this article?
The Tribune is becoming a silly excuse for a newspaper and the editors seem to be going through the motions. This story disrepects victims.

How about writing some articles on promoting goverment fiscal responsibilty and idea for job creation by the private sector. What are you people writing about? SICK! The middle class is getting hammered and dying out. No one is doing well except politicians, crooked traders, government workers, and the brain-washing media.

The ONLY good thing that came out of this was that that lunatic killed herself so she couldn't ude the justice system to get off by reason of insanity.

I was wondering why the tribune dug up a shooting story from 1988, then i read this:

"Andrew went through rehabilitation and earned a law degree. He urged stricter gun control measures by serving as executive director of the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence."

Nice job tribune!

My question is where is Laurie Dann now? When I earched for her in the Illinois Department of Corrections site, there is no listing????? And because almost all of our state mental hospitals have closed in the last 20 years, it makes me wonder...

One of several issues illustrated by this sorry story of another crazy going off and shooting people is that no adult was nearby who was armed and ready to fight back.

The Tribune ought to support concealed/open carry in Illinois. Check out Missouri's concealed carry laws and pass them in Illinois.

I worked for the neighboring Evanston Police department at the time - such a harrowing, confusing, and heart breaking incident to witness. My thoughts and prayers go out to the survivors.

Ahh..did they call you out of a NRA meeting for this one? Yep, the solution to gun violence is always more guns. Jus' like the old west. Settle everything with a gunfight!

I remember that day clearly.

And, like little rich girl and The Watcher pointed out before me, the real story was Laurie Dann and how her mental illness was denied by her parents and others close to her. There was a lot of cover-up, both at the time and in the past twenty years by that family.

Phil Andrew has made a real contribution to society by devoting his life to law enforcement and gun control. That's one of the few good things to emerge from this mess.

Wow -- using a story memorializing a tragedy as a springboard to push your own political agenda. Some of you people are just as sick as Laurie Dann was, and I pity you just as much!

yes that's what we need more guns in schools. More guns everywhere!! Because its not the guns that kill people its the people. Oh won't someone please think of the hurt feeling of all those guns that will never get to be fired! I tell ya that's some great logic there Dan!!
