It was voted on, but some people didn't like the vote. I sympathize with them, but wonder what they want.
At first I hated the structure, but now that it is complete, it seems perfectly fine. The last paragraph about says it all. These people apparently just want a "cause". |

They shouldn't relocate it, it would make better firewood, if they do relocate it how about NYC

Enough is enough. Those who are opposed to the park really need to get a life. Our town, Wilmington, our State, Vermont and country have much greater issues than this dam park. Wish these 300 petitioners would spend their energies in solving our greater issues and take some time to go to the park and "chill"

The pergola design is a very nice rustic, naturalistic design -- in a wilderness setting it just might work. I imagine that someone thought, "oh, it's Vermont, so we need to do something natural and organic looking." Turns out, what is appropriate for the wilderness is completely unacceptable for a Vermont town that is blessed with so many wonderful historical precedents. When I first saw the pergola, my reaction was "nice design but wrong location." A pergola should be more of an understated accessory structure, not a "main event". The site is simply too important to allow wilderness architecture to set the tone.

it's about going on a power trip and getting something changed. It really don't matter what the issue is, just take on something to get a warm & fuzzy feeling for having made an impact on the world and leave a legacy, make a name for themsleves. The town should bill the cost to the 300 people who thought it was a good idea. |

a group of 300 or so sounds more like a gang. watch out they don't storm the town at nite like a witch hunt and burn it down just like the building did.

Wilmington is a tourist trap. They made that decision long ago. Historic district? come on.
The question is: Are they willing to redirect toward a more arts based economy/aesthetic? Historicism can be maintained but not returned to. That's called anachronism. |

how about a barroom with people stumbling out on the road as the light changes

I always rmember Wilmington for Fat City and North Country Fair ! Maybe I spent too much time in those bygone, illustrious establishments. What is a pergola????
|

Plenty of those already in ol' Wilming town. |

These people objecting to this beautiful park all need to get lives doing something more positive for their community. Anyone objecting to this gorgeous addition to town has their head up their butt....and should start spending their time volunteering for some worthy cause instead of taking up the precious time of Wilmington town officials. Whiners, just a bunch of whiners. Wilmington has a huge problem with anything new and valuable trying to materialize, and the negativity in this town has reached epic proportions.

Just because it's "artsy", progressive, contemporary, organic, newer or whatever doesn't make it a successful design for the setting or the place. It's a 1950s-60s mentality to say, newer is better and the past cannot be revisited. A traditional design takes the best from the past so that the pergola could actually have some relation to its surrounding buildings. If you want to experiment with design, why would you do that in the most public of places? Propriety please.

I'm offering wilmington 5.00 for the wood and you get rid of the stumps or is it sprayed with stain or pest crap

I am sorry but I have to say I find it humorous that this town is full of people so concerned over something that looks good that they would waste the towns time and money to try and get it removed. I have seen the park and pergola and it looks very nice. This is a huge debate because it supposedly doesn't fit in with the towns historic theme? Give me a break. This isnt an old western town in the OK Corral. There are plenty of towns/cities that have a historical theme that still have very nice artistic monuments. I think these folks who are making such a huge deal about this need to realize they are making their town look much worse then the pergola ever will. A bunch of whiners is what I am seeing. Oh and hey, I hear that the town was in defecit until fairly recently and is now actually in surplus. But by all means, lets make the beautiful pergola the focus of the town. Come on people.. I am glad I moved out of there years ago. Sheesh

My relatives who came for a visit actually laughed when they saw the monstrosity. It just doesn't fit. It would work in any number of places but doesn't in Wilmington. For all those whining about the 300 needing to do something more productive for the community - get over yourselves. Getting rid of it IS doing something productive for the community and it shows community concern.
If you like plopping some modern art on the Mall in Washington DC. next to the Lincoln Memorial - I get your liking the wood "thing" ....... but its not in keeping with the town. Is it the greatest tragedy to befall a town - no. Is it ugly in its context - Lord yes. Also by the way the reaction from out of towners who I talk to every day for their vacation stays is UNIVERSALLY negative. |

Oh Bull Crap! I went to the car show last Sunday and when I went through town, I was so busy looking at all the huge plastic neon moose that I didn't even notice the pergola. On the way back I rememberd the gripe and hype so I kept an eye out for it. I passed the damn thing and had to turn around to get a good look at it. You are nothing more than a small minded & silly snob.

Did somebody say 300.
Want the pergola gone. Then come and get it! Tonight we dine in hell This is where we fight and the pergola stays Spartans, give them nothing, but take from them everything. |

I wish I new what the other options were for this site originally, but I do not. I did not like the 'pergola' when the structure was first put up, and I understand it cost quite a bit of $ to put up. At first, I was disappointed.
Since, the pergola site has been maintained beautifully season to season and has become a "landmark" for our journey into town that our family enjoys. I have become pleasantly surprised with the setting. I would like to know what the 300 people against the pergola would like to see at that site? Perhaps they can put it at the abaondonned "Panchos Wreck" property or other vacant areas along Route 9. I don't believe another cramped in business in the area is needed in that exact location. |
