The United Way of Southern Cameron County is developing a pilot project to provide an alternative to payday loans and other lending practices that target people who don't have access to traditional credit, but are in need of short-term loans.

A grassfire is burning near Wickett close to Interstate 20 and Ranch Road 1219. A dispatcher with the Ward County Sheriff's Office said volunteer firefighters from Wickett, Monahans and Grandfalls were alerted to the fire at about 9 p.m. Thursday and they are on the scene battling it, but he had little additional information.
