New marker honors Revolutionary soldier
Revolutionary War soldier Solomon Fountain has been honored with a marker at William and Mary Hart Presbyterian Church in Leggett.

Mrs. Vener Mae Burnett Lawson Billings Moxley, 71, of Lexington passed away peacefully at her home on May 10, 2012, surrounded by her loving family.
Public schools have existed in Surry County since at least the 1860s, but it was not until 1885 that a true structure was in place.
Flood water damages bridges, roads
Large amounts of water flood Old U.S. 52 South at Wood Hill Lane near Armstrong Road Tuesday at about 11 p.m. The water covered the entire roadway for about an hour.
Two firefighters struck by lightning
A pick-up truck braves the high water that completely covered Old U.S. 52 South in the curve beside TNT Carports Thursday night as heavy rains continued to pelt the area, keeping fire, emergency and law enforcement crews on their toes.
