Mayoral contest shapes up in Westwood
“As a health care professional and business owner I can be part of a team that works to attract complementary and property tax-paying business to our city.”
Westwood has a mayoral race this year.
Newcomer Teresa Elder has filed with the Johnson County Election Office to run against Westwood Mayor Karen Johnson.
Elder is running on a slate with newcomers John YA© and Paul Day, who are vying for two open positions on the City Council.
The three of them say they want to create a better Westwood with new leadership.
'We need to establish a standard of behavior so that everyone dealing with our city -- all residents, potential residents, business owners and potential business owners -- can expect to be treated with dignity, respect and professionalism,' said Elder, a 43-year-old business owner and chiropractor. Commentary: Smoking bans fall short of the mark
New laws clearing tobacco smoke from most of this county's eateries are a welcome trend, though not a fully satisfying one.
As 2008 dawned, smoking bans went into effect in Lenexa, Shawnee, Overland Park and Leawood. Previously, Olathe, Fairway, Roeland Park and Westwood all had taken similar action. As a result, more than 700 Joco eating establishments now are governed by such regulations. It's enough to make a non-smoker shout for joy.
But wait. Before you start cheering, take a deep, cleansing, smoke-free breath and realize that much work remains to be done. Read more

Some leaders in northeast Johnson County don't aren't ready to support the current plan for a merger of Johnson County Consolidated Fire District No. 2 and the Merriam Fire Department.
After reviewing the fire district's financial proposal, an ad hoc committee -- made up of representatives from Fairway, Mission and Mission Hills --concluded the merger would not equally benefit both parties.
Mike Scanlon, Mission's city administrator, presented the committee's findings to the fire district board Tuesday. Read more
