I hope this helps some of them understand. Unfortunately, it won't help all.

Why are the cops offering this? The Parents should be teaching these idiot teens first.

Send these teens to the morgue on a day after a night of a few DWI and idiot driving fatality wrecks. That might make them actually think twice about the rules of the road.

Wow. You really have a lot of anger issues. This is a great opportunity to improve driving skills.

Sorry to disappoint you. I don't have anger issues. I feel that the Police Department should not be the ones showing teens about defensive driving. The parents of the teens should be responsible for educating their sons and daughters.

Reading the news almost every week and seeing the wrecks by mostly inexperienced teens, the police should be doing what they are trained to do, not babysit. Allow the police to bring these teens to see what CAN happen and the effects of irresponsible driving. Parents should do what they are supposed to do, PARENTING! instead of giving a set of keys and not imposing rules to these teens.

Having taught 2 teens with 2 more to go, I can say first-hand that LI is not an easy place to learn to drive. Letting them experience controlled spins and skids is a step in the right direction for learning to maintain better control on the roads.

Anyting that can help keep our roads safe (and it's not just the teens) is positive.

Is this the same course the keystone cops take prior to thier crunch and crash tours? Have you seen some of those PD wrecks parked outside the county garage at the fourth ?

My old man taught me in a closed store parking lot on an icy/snowy days how to react, judge and respond to a "controlled slide". Also taught me on rainy days when to tap or brake. I'm sure you are PARENTING your children well and I commend you, but there seems to be a need of parents like you out there teaching and preparing one's child to be a responsible driver.

I DID teach my 17 year old son - and I think this would be a great opportunity for even MORE experience from those who have seen much more than me. I wonder if Nassau County offers anything like this. I will definitely look into it.

Funny, I learned the same way. Experience in a safe environment has saved my a55 and others a few times. It's nice to know how a car handles before you become a Newsday headline.
For those who think it's all a joke and believe the manufacturers ads, get ready to make headline news.

I think this is something positive.
I'm sure parents do their best to teach their kids how to drive, but I've seen the parents on the road and they can't drive.
If this saves a few lives it's well worth it.
Thanks SCPD

I suppose you were the PERFECT teenager. Never an idiot? Always thought nothing would ever happen to you? Go back and remember when you were young and stupid. We all thought that nothing could harm us when we were kids.

Why don't they just put drivers education back in the schools? Cut the teachers salaries and give the kids a chance to be better drivers.

So Levy is dismantling the police dept but has money to spend on this. How about leaving Suffolk County on Highway Patrol so these reckless kids get tickets. Thats the only way they will learn. Tickets are not being written on these Highways and the speeds and recklessness is getting crazy. Now Levy and Dormer are dismantling COPE in the pcts, turning Suffolk into a reactive police dept that will only have patrol that goes from one 911 call to the next. That is not preventing crime, its getting there after it has happened. Suffolk County will be on the decline, Levy is creating an environment that will be favorable for it.
You should call your legislature and complain. You are paying for police services that no longer exist.
