The full-court press by area economic development teams for major Kia suppliers is about over, save for a couple of companies yet to announce their intentions.
That leaves Columbus, Phenix City and other communities not within 10 miles or so of the massive Kia Motors auto assembly plant being built in West Point, Ga., hoping to snare one of the lower-tier auto part manufacturers. There are an estimated eight to 10 of those remaining.
'Columbus was never in the picture for Tier 1 suppliers,' said Becca Hardin, executive vice president of economic development with the Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce. 'We had a couple of companies look down here, but we're not close enough to the main Kia facility to really even be in the running.' Read more
