Opponent files ethics complaint against West Palm Beach's James

The political challenger to incumbent West Palm Beach District 4 commissioner Keith A. James has filed a complaint with the Palm Beach County Commission on Ethics. Alex Augustin says in a complaint filed Monday that James should have disclosed he was a longtime corporate registered agent for a church whose non-profit housing offshoot was embroiled in a low-income housing spat that likely will cost the city at least $1.46 million , and that James collected a $2,500 fee for doing title searches for the non-profit.

Report: Tampa Bay's economic growth slowed last year

The bay area's economic output - the metro version of the country's gross domestic product - rose 2.3 percent last year, according to an analysis released Tuesday by the Department of Commerce's Bureau of Economic Analysis. Lawsuit filed against DCF by sister of Nubia Barahona

The sister of a South Florida girl who died while in the custody of their adoptive parents has filed a lawsuit against the Department of Children and Families. The lawsuit, filed Monday in Miami-Dade County court on behalf of the 11-year-old girl referred to as "J.B.," claims negligence on the part of the agency and three of its workers who were in charge of checking on the Barahona family.

The retrial of Wellington polo mogul John Goodman on a DUI manslaughter charge will be heard by a jury chosen outside of Palm Beach County. Circuit Judge Jeffrey Colbath decided last week that jurors will be chosen beginning Oct. 6 in either Tampa or Jacksonville.

City commissioners hold a regular meeting at 5 p.m. today at commission chambers at City Hall, 401 Clematis St. At the meeting, the panel is scheduled to vote to authorize closing railroad crossings at Datura and Evernia streets for the new station for the "All Aboard Florida" rail route. Commissioners also had planned today to hold their second and final vote to establish, and fill, a 9-member outside governing board for their city-run charter school.
