FAIRLEE-"What will it take to bring businesses over here to Fairlee and Bradford?" Fairlee Selectboard member Ken Gulick asked state representative Sarah Copeland Hanzas during the board's Feb. 11 meeting. Commenting on the number of small businesses along Route 14 in Bethel and Royalton, he added, "we don't have any businesses here except tourism."
Hanzas replied that the lack of a sewer has turned several potential tenants away from Bradford's industrial park and curtailed the development of a bigger grocery story, pointing out that more acreage is needed for a business to install the required septic system and backup. Read more

More calls stretch responders' capacity

WEST FAIRLEE-There will likely be some changes to the service area in 2008 between the town of West Fairlee and the Thetford FAST Squad, but no specific date has yet been determined. Negotiations are ongoing between the Thetford FAST Squad and the West Fairlee Selectboard with the hope of coming to some kind of agreement that will avoid an interruption in emergency response service to West Fairlee, while limiting the burden on the FAST Squad.
The issues stems from problems that may arise as squad members respond to emergency calls in West Fairlee-far from their base in Thetford Center. At present, Thetford's service area is stretched to capacity and they need to focus on their core area, lest they become compromised. Read more
