2 fishermen in canoe missing off South Shore

Using a canoe in those waters?

Went out on Sunday and not reported missing until Wednesday? Why the urgencey?

You don't see many Canoes in the Bay. Especially ones with Fisherman in them. I think Newsday did a very nice job of digging up unimportant and probably untrue information, rather than tackle a relevant issue. This paper is the creepiest Liberal Tabloid out there.

They were not real fishermen for real ones check the waves etc and would not take a canoe out into those waters I pray for their safe return

I've been canoeing in the Great South Bay for about 25 years now. Much of it is pretty shallow, and if you stay out of the channels you'll avoid most traffic. A big canoe, say 18 feet or more is pretty stable, and you can spend a day watching things that the guys in the motor boats will never see. I birdwatch, look for turtles, crab hatches, etc. It's a nice day out on the water.

BUT...you should be a strong swimmer, know how to right a boat if it goes over, and wear a life jacket. If you were just going to set out in an aluminum grumman 15 footer, you'd be a fool and probably be in trouble right quick.

All jokes about Indians aside, people did use canoes on these waters for hundreds of years just fine. The problem is when most people grow up inside playing video games, instead of learning to swim and be safe on the water, that you run into trouble.

And a big shout out to my mom, who grew up in 1920's Long Beach and made sure all her kids could swim like fish.:)

If their van was parked at the Wantagh 3 they must have went out at night. If they would have parked there in the day time the troopers would have been up on them writing a ticket before they got the canoe off the roof. The current flowing through that bridge is fast and dangerous. That combined with the fact that any idiot with a dollar can buy a boat and take it out on the bay with no training or experience means these guys either drowned or got run over. Their bodies should surface today or tomorrow at the latest.

Maybe the Hempstead Town Bay Constables and the Wantagh FD, but I really doubt that the Hempstead FD is involved in this incident....
