Last month, the U.S. Supreme Court slashed a civil judgment of $5 billion originally awarded to Alaskan fishermen and other businesses that were harmed in one of the most notorious environmental disasters in American history. In March, 1989 the Exxon Valdez struck a reef off of Alaska spilling 11 million gallons of crude oil into the Prince William Sound that washed up on hundreds of miles of coastline.
The Court's decision limited punitive damages to the civil plaintiffs to $500 million, but the legacy of the accident will persist long after the attorney's fees have been settled. Part of the incident's notoriety has been sustained by stunning images of oil-fouled marine birds and animals.

More calls stretch responders' capacity
“Until there is a resolution, we aren't going anywhere.”
WEST FAIRLEE-There will likely be some changes to the service area in 2008 between the town of West Fairlee and the Thetford FAST Squad, but no specific date has yet been determined. Negotiations are ongoing between the Thetford FAST Squad and the West Fairlee Selectboard with the hope of coming to some kind of agreement that will avoid an interruption in emergency response service to West Fairlee, while limiting the burden on the FAST Squad.
The issues stems from problems that may arise as squad members respond to emergency calls in West Fairlee-far from their base in Thetford Center. At present, Thetford's service area is stretched to capacity and they need to focus on their core area, lest they become compromised. Read more
