Crash At Butler-McCook Homestead Now Part Of Past

A $1.3 million renovation of the historic Butler-McCook Homestead on Main Street in Hartford had just been finished when, on Aug. 4, 2002, a vehicle driven by Wilfredo Sanchez of Hartford crashed through a wall causing more than $700,000 in damage to the home, which is among Hartford's oldest, and its contents. Less than a year later, on Sept. 14, 2003, Sanchez was speeding along Wethersfield Avenue in Hartford in a stolen car when he hit and killed 39-year-old Donald Foss of Hartford. Sanchez was was sentenced to16 years in prison. Read more

A Historical Organization Changes With The Times
“It's going to be a very big day”
Sheryl Hack encountered a problem after she took a job three years ago with one of the state's venerable cultural organizations. Whenever she introduced herself as executive director of the Antiquarian & Landmarks Society, she was frequently met with 'blank stares.'
The archaic name caused a lot of confusion about the organization's purpose. To end the confusion, the 72-year-old society voted last fall to change its name: it is now known simply as Connecticut Landmarks.
The new name, Hack said, better represents the organization's relevance and goal of exploring Connecticut history in new ways. Read more

Victims In Straub Case, Again Victimized In Bankruptcy
“This was a unique case in many ways. It involved the intersection of the state costs of incarcerating a prisoner, federal bankruptcy laws, an employee's pension rights and victims of a crime.”
As former state probation officer Richard Straub was led out of the Danielson courthouse in shackles, headed to jail for 15 years, many of the men he had molested when they were his teenage clients thought they finally would be rid of the sexual predator who had changed their lives forever.
But the man who had forced them to have sex in his office wasn't through with them yet.
About a year after he went to prison in August 2000, Straub filed for bankruptcy and in the process publicly identified several of his victims as potential creditors. Read more
