Crash At Butler-McCook Homestead Now Part Of Past
“People are curious. They want to know what we lost and what we were able to save”
A $1.3 million renovation of the historic Butler-McCook Homestead on Main Street in Hartford had just been finished when, on Aug. 4, 2002, a vehicle driven by Wilfredo Sanchez of Hartford crashed through a wall causing more than $700,000 in damage to the home, which is among Hartford's oldest, and its contents. Less than a year later, on Sept. 14, 2003, Sanchez was speeding along Wethersfield Avenue in Hartford in a stolen car when he hit and killed 39-year-old Donald Foss of Hartford. Sanchez was was sentenced to16 years in prison. Read more

A Historical Organization Changes With The Times
“It's going to be a very big day”
Sheryl Hack encountered a problem after she took a job three years ago with one of the state's venerable cultural organizations. Whenever she introduced herself as executive director of the Antiquarian & Landmarks Society, she was frequently met with 'blank stares.'
The archaic name caused a lot of confusion about the organization's purpose. To end the confusion, the 72-year-old society voted last fall to change its name: it is now known simply as Connecticut Landmarks.
The new name, Hack said, better represents the organization's relevance and goal of exploring Connecticut history in new ways. Read more

Victims In Straub Case, Again Victimized In Bankruptcy
“This was a unique case in many ways. It involved the intersection of the state costs of incarcerating a prisoner, federal bankruptcy laws, an employee's pension rights and victims of a crime.”
As former state probation officer Richard Straub was led out of the Danielson courthouse in shackles, headed to jail for 15 years, many of the men he had molested when they were his teenage clients thought they finally would be rid of the sexual predator who had changed their lives forever.
But the man who had forced them to have sex in his office wasn't through with them yet.
About a year after he went to prison in August 2000, Straub filed for bankruptcy and in the process publicly identified several of his victims as potential creditors. Read more

Official Urges East Hartford School Board To 'Work Smarter'
“There is little confidence in the board's capacity to tackle the significant challenges in raising achievement”
State education Commissioner Mark McQuillan urged the school board Monday to 'work smarter and faster' in developing a plan that would boost standardized test scores in the district.
McQuillan, a former Massachusetts educator, said he attended Monday's school board meeting to 'instill a sense of urgency' in improving area schools.
East Hartford was among 12 districts subjected to a recent state-mandated assessment after failing to make adequate yearly progress on standardized test scores for at least four consecutive years. Read more

Essex Gallery's Failure Leaves Artists Fuming
“But nobody should be taken like this. I did everything I was supposed to do. Where was his end of the bargain?”
For Massachusetts artist Michael Ornstein, selling 'Rest,' a self-portrait he painted during his wife's pregnancy, was like losing a part of himself.
But when he learned of the love the buyer had for the $2,000 painting, selling 'Rest' no longer seemed like such a loss - until the check failed to arrive in the mail. Ornstein and more than two dozen other artists who sold artwork through the Brick Gallery, which closed in December, have yet to receive payment for their work.
The decision by the gallery's owner, Joseph D. O'Neal, to file for bankruptcy protection on March 31 dimmed the artists' hope that they would ever recover the hundreds - and in some cases thousands - of dollars they are owed for their works of art. Read more
