Avalanche claims life of girl, 13
“There were from 10 to 25 students using the counselors at any one time. There was a lot of need for the counselors.”
Emily Swanson was hiking Friday, on the trail to Lake 22, off the Mountain Loop Highway. Her group of eight hikers, all family and friends, were turned away from finishing their hike by bad weather.
On their way back, at 2:30 p.m., an avalanche started above them and engulfed four of the eight hikers. One boy freed himself, and two girls were rescued by other group members. But 13-year-old Emily could not be found.
The group searched for Emily for over an hour, then went to the Verlot visitors' center to call for help. Read more
