Who wants to hear the truth? Tough times? Spending nearly 10 million on a dog shelter that was orignally budgeted for 2 millsion...c'mon...
oh..and there is more! |

I always shop in Upland. Anyone who drives two minutes to Claremont is crazy. Their sales tax is over 10%. They are going to bankrupt themselves.

Hey, Carl, the "dog shelter" as you refer to it was sorely needed and it provides a needed service to residents in our city! Building and construction never comes cheap and our city leaders did their best to keep costs low. Your "spending nearly 10 million" is way off the mark, so go bark up a different tree and leave the animals alone. The article is referring to shopping in Upland. Every resident should be encouraged to do so and after reading how important it is, it makes perfect sense. |

Upland downtown! Oxymoron??? David Allen might be smirking at this one.
I try to shop downtown Upland whenever possible. |

Where are the "upscale" department and eateries destined for the Colonies huge dirt lot near the 210 ? I've been waiting to spend my money there but Victoria gardens keeps me shopping there. I would love to spend my hard earned money in my own town, but where ?
"Build it and they will come" But BUILD IT already! |

So Mags, the city council is lying about how much they spent on the shelter? I think you need to do some research. Our leaders? First of all, I am not-sub servant to your leaders, which did a horrible job spending my tax dollars. Lets say I am wrong with my numbers (which I'm not), lets say they were off by 2 million. That still doubles what they had allocated towards the dog shelter (last time I checked..they were the primary inhabitant..not Lamas or Elephants; although they could fit!) That is still a 200% increase. In the private sector a CEO who was so far off would be fired! A shelter which a consulting firm said not to build because it was not feasible for a city the size of Upland(at a cost of 45,000.) They recommended the city contract out the services. The new "dog mahal or barkingham palace" is 10 times the size of the current animal shelter do we really need a new shelter that big? A shelter which will increase the current operating cost my 4 times. Is this really a smart investment with our tax dollars. Have you driven the city lately? The roads are crumbling, trees need to be trimmed and the criminals have encroached farther north. While no one likes to see a dog harmed or dead on the roadway, we could have found a better solution. As far as the article about shopping in Upland. Why should I spend in Upland if they are going to manage the money so poorly? The primary goal of gov't is to protect me from criminal, provide basic services like water and electricity, not feel good services like DOG SHELTERS and if they do provide these services it should be done at bargain basement prices. They should not build opulent places for animals. Sure, I will spend in Upland, but not because of want the city manager states. Why should I trust a man that makes way too much money compared to his counterparts. |

How much spending does it take cover the supes giveaway of $102M?
i believe if you love your town you sould spend your money in it. well as much as you can.
now my question is this if we spend our money in only American made goods do we get to keep our money in our economy? and is it a good thing if everyone did it. i don't want to hear that i'm stupid i want a good educated answer to my question not of my intellgence or writting. i know it is hard i like my produce all year round but when i can i try to stay in cali. |
now off the topic,
if we really do spend all that money on a shelter, i hope we also get some training and equipment to deal with bears and even snakes. it is terrible the we have to resort to shooting our wild neighbors when we have our own animal services. |

I'm supposed to be concerned about the financial status of the Upland Police Department? Is this some kind of sick and twisted joke? The people who run this city need to be thrown in jail along with the leadership of this non functional police department.
Our local police department took it upon themselves to get caught up in a very public and notable legal issue. If this weren't bad enough, an officer went on record stating that they, the Upland P.D, should have "taken care of" a local business owner. This business owner made the unfortunate decision to question an apparent unethical contract with a business in Montclair. The city needs some people who aren't weirdos in order to become number one. |
As usual random thoughts, but no substance. You throw out generalities but don't give any facts, names or locations. I hope you never need the help of the police, because I could see them stop at a red light rather than running it to save your pathetic as. |
This was a very well known case. http://www.docstoc.com/docs/881036/BECK-V-Cit... "Ken, we should have taken care of you a long time ago." |
Sorry, this is not a very well known case,. ie Miranda v. Arizona. This is a small time case that worked its way through the process. This is the one case you could find to show wrong doing...wow, very weak argument. Granted these two Officers made mistakes, but really a pattern of abuse needs more than one instance. You still have no proven your point. The only thing you have established is you have a hatred towards the Upland Police Department and many other local Departments. |
I don't remember making any claim stating there was a pattern of abuse and then presenting this case of proof of said abuse. This case was presented as an example of how ironic it is for the people who run the city to expect the citizens help with their cash problem. It must not be that serious of an issue if the Upland P.D continues to handle situations in a similar manner as the case noted above. I don't have a problem with the local departments as you claim. The Rancho Cucamonga P.D, for example, could teach Upland a thing or two about how to behave like police officers. No, my issue involves just the Ontario and Upland police departments. |
The RC cops have killed too many people over the last several years to be a good example of how to handle certain situations. |
Your best solution would be to move to Rancho Cucamonga. Then you could shop there and enjoy the police department that could teach Upland a thing or two. There doesn't seem to be much that you do like living in Upland. There's a lot of us that do! |
I've met some very good people here in the city of Upland and just let me say that the leadership of both the city and the police department do not represent these people at all. |
I have to agree with Mags. ALL of your thoughts about the Police Department and the city have been negative. Then you try and back track!?!? You have spoke poorly about the Upland Police from top to bottom. So what is your solution? To be honest, I haven't heard you say some thing positive about any police department. Must be nice to be so perfect. You also have used these posts to state there is a pattern abuse. Your one case does not show a pattern or history. Look at every law enforcement agency or city and they have had cases go against them and in there favor. So, speak up what is your true gripe about the police...DUI, speeding ticket or worse? |
You never replied to my second post about the shelter? |
What's the point in responding to you? I doubt any response is going to change your mind. Have you ever been inside the current shelter? Have you ever volunteered your time to help? October 24th was make a difference day. Did you make a difference that day? Did you give an hour or two to help to make a difference in your city? You mention contracting out services. It's obvious to me that you don't have a pet. Anyone with a pet would agree that not one pet owner would want to drive to POMONA to pick up their lost dog or cat. Did you ever check the euthanasia rate at the shelter that was proposed to take over our services? Do your homework. It's abysmal. The residents of Upland are quite fortunate to have such professional, dedicated and hard working staff members that care about animals and are out in the field every day to assist not only the lost and injured animals but the residents of our city, too. It's hardly noticed because of the stellar job they do. Maybe you would like to reside in a city where the carcasses of animals are lying in the street while you wait for animal control to respond to your call. Maybe a high rate of euthanasia of animals doesn't concern you but to some of us, it does. If you haven't been inside our current facility, I suggest you make a trek there and see all of the animals. When the shelter is full -- because it can't adequately house the dogs/cats belonging to city residents due to the fact that it was built to meet residency needs two decades ago -- you explain that to the faces of the animals that are healthy and adoptable dogs and cats that have to be put down just because there's not enough space to house them while they await adoption. The facility is a testament to the leaders of our city who did their best to provide a facility befitting the city of gracious living. You indicate you don't even want to shop in your own city? Your tax dollar helps to fund other programs just not the animal shelter. But, alas, you have a bone to pick, so out of spite, penalize all of the other services while you criticize those who actually give their time to make the city an even better place to live. |
