Pacific Outfitters isn't going to make it long in Ukiah with their prices!$200 jackets,$130 women's jeans? Seriously? In Ukiah?? When my husband and I went in to check it out, we were bombarded by sales staff directing us to the most expensive items in the store. Good luck to them, cause their going to need it!

i believe they ARE based out of hum.co. unlike brown-foreman inc., the large booze subsidiary (jack d's) who bought out fetzer whines a few years back and proceeded to then gut the butler cherry ranch. make sure you remember them next time you try to keep it local...

What is the defintion of a local business owner anymore?
The owner of Diamond Jims has other businesses and a family in the Bay Area. He spends three days a week in Ukiah and his family lives in the Bay.
Does that make him local? What about the four zillion nail salons? Are those people local? The motel owners? The gas station owners? Shouldn't someone live in Ukiah FULL TIME to be considered local?

It's a take over. Who in this county can afford a business? Just like Bank of America, it is owned by the Japanese.

Local...? Exactly... While driving back from Lake County (Lakeport), at about 5:30: PM turn onto 20, from 29 heading to Ukiah I notice LONG lines of vehicles...!
There are a many people live in Lake County have to drive to Ukiah for work, they work here then take their paycheck home to Lake County.
Is that local...?
And you are exactly corect about owner of Diamond Jim's,(back on topic)... he does live in the Bay Area (Hayward Area)... that is NOT local... and neither is Pacific Outfitters for that matter. But that won't stop people from buying there, it's a nice store and the owners will gladly take your Ukiah Money and send it to Humboldt County.

Sales tax, DROS fees, business fees, Employees wages, etc. all stay "local".
As a former Gun Store Owner I can assure You that these items alone represent a substantial gain to Our Counties coffers. Assuming of course that We support this new Enterprise.

With Pacific Outfitters gun prices at MSRP or HIGHER... not to mention everything else at 40%GPM or higher... that's a lot of money going to Humboldt Co. compared to minimal annual bus. lic. fees etc, 8.75% sales tax and DROS fee stays here...? Nawwwww... DROS fee is mandatory cost at 25$ goes to State of CA DOJ.
Sales TAX and Business fee Pfffft...! And wages... c'mon, minimal at 7$- 11$ per hour at best...!?! New employees there lucky to have a new job in this economic climate, they gladly take anything right now! So, good for local employees. However, no big deal to an out of town owned business here in our comminity! How do you think they will pay for MAJOR renovation investment, advertisements and wages etc...'high retail prices', and your money going to Eureka, CA...!

OK, so you really need to know the FACTS before commenting. EVERY employee of Pacific Outfitters lives here, including the managers. They BOUGHT the building, so the property tax goes right back to Ukiah. EVERYONE who was contracted to renovate the building was from Ukiah. The sales tax from EVERY sale goes to Ukiah.
This is how a local business should be!

You are NOT correct, you DO NOT know what you are saying... I will school you.

Sales tax is charged the consumer by the retail establishment. The retail establishment then turns collected tax monies to the CA State Board of Equalization... the State then allocates that money for various State and local offices for use as follows;

5.00%; State, General Fund
0.25%; State, Fiscal Recovery Fund
0.50%; State, Local Revenue Fund
0.50%; State, Local Public Safety Fund
1.00%; Uniform Local Tax
0.50%; Local County, Transportation funds
1.00%; Local City/County - Operational funds

Therefore, as you can see in the above %'s breakdown the City & County of Mendocino will receive a combined total 13% of the 8.75% of tax collected by the retailer.
Now, get you minimalist mind away from the big picture. The profit for a retail store of this nature, is somewhere in the neighborhood of 40-60% GPM.
I will school you now on Gross Profit Margin (GPM). If you own a business; and you purchase items for resale..., say you purchase a product for $60.00 [cost], and you mark that item up to $100.00... You have made $40.00 [profit], or 40% GPM.
For every dollar you spend at local business, and that business is owned out of County... the profit, enormous in comparison to sales tax/property tax, the PROFIT goes out of County.
I have nothing against out of County business; they do provide work for local citizens. However, the money that ends up staying in County is small in comparison to outgoing profit.
I hope this helps you to better understand, see you jump to conclusion without facts. But that's okay... you DO NOT know of this information, that is quite obvious.

Some of you guys sure like to get yourself worked up about stuff, I just want to say it is a cool store and I like it. It was well overdue for our town and I hope it stays, minus all that nit picky nonsense. Nothing changes the fact that it is a cool store that we needed!

Daily Horoscope for December 29

Libra

An emotional situation is as clear as mud today. You aren't sure about your feelings for a certain someone, nor are you convinced that you know what they're playing at. They may be saying one thing and doing another, and you might even suspect that they're playing games with you or trying to get what they can out of the relationship. Or maybe you're imagining the whole thing? Admit it - at this stage you simply don't know.
