It is time for a new bridge to relieve the infrastructure stress of the area roads of the "Bridge of Americas." It is the right place. Mexico already has the space ready for a crossing at Yarborough. This is the right place and centrally located for the business of the area. A half hour drive to Zaragosa and the Bridge of Americas is too long in a city of these sizes.

At least somebody is listening to the little people. If people are waiting three hours on the briges right now what is a twenty minute drive. Expand Zaragosa.
What part doesn't anyone understand? Drive by the bridges we already have and more than half of the lanes are closed. Why aren't they at full capacity now? |

I can't wait to see your next installment/retraction in a couple of hours, Gustavo.
Silvestre may or may not support the bridge study? I don't really know because I can't be bothered to get the facts straight. "U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes says he supports Lower Valley bridge ... U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes, D-Texas, said Wednesday that he supports the city's study into the construction of an international bridge in the Lower Valley, despite the vociferous opposition from neighbors and school district officials." Reyes is a two faced double dealing politician. You would think he would at some point try to be a person of integrity instead of a weasle.
Have the Reyes' Mijos and Mijas switched from the border camera business to bridge building?
That is not the Rio Grande you smell but family PORK. |
To Does He or Does He not:
Its rather unfair to blame the reporter for reporting the fact that Reyes talks out of both sides of this mouth. In this one issue, reyes proves that, no matter on what side of the issue YOU stand on, he agrees with you... |

what exactly does this guy wan't bridges or walls?
vote the bums out. I don't care if they are Republican or Demwit, they must go if they won’t listen to majority rules. These politicians are about business as usual and we want (demand) change. Vote Anti-Incumbent for the next 6 years. This cleans out the House, Senate, and President and gives a wake up call for all new politicians. Vote Anti-Incumbent every 8 years unless the new politicians go back to the same old same old. The voters should have control of politicians not the other way around. The only way we can control them is with your vote. |

* GREAT NEWS in Gustavo's article that any study should take a "regional look" at this issue, and not target just a specific area.
* The last few days your TIMES has reported on the new City SMART GROWTH effort. Are there OPPORTUNITIES in the Lower Valley, where YISD "stakeholders" feel "quality of life" improvements could be made which improve, plus strengthen their neighborhoods? * Could "speed humps" help? Instead of a Mesa Street first Bus Rapid Transit route, would one in the Lower Valley assist that area? Bike Routes is now a fashionable, progressive topic. Is there a good route or two available in the Lower Valley? * How about your TIMES surfacing some of these fashionable, progressive SMART GROWTH ideas to the folks in the Lower Valley. Suspect their community imput would be helpful, vocal, and colorful. |

The congressman is smart to know the people dont want the bridge and is backing off. It is obvious the mayor is angry because the congressman is not backing him and he looks like a fool. He needed the support to force the bridge building.
Nevertheless, he will continue with the study, code for: I dont care, the bridge is GOING to be built whether you like it or not. |

let's get this this idiot out of office

Jose, the people will complain forever but never vote. Too many deep pockets is the other problem.

Interesting. Expanding the scope of this study is exactly what is called for. Opening all existing lanes is imperative to conducting a legitimate study. Definition of the proposed bridge footprint is a specific concern, and needs to be addressed. They can tell us it will be a commuter bridge only, but can't tell us how many lanes they are proposing? They pretend that routing into our valley is not their desire, but all early planning shows exactly that... Rapid Transit is coming to Yarbrough. There are several Sun Metro projects on the rolls including park and rides all along Yarbrough including a fueling station at I-10/Yarbrough. This High Occupancy Vehicle proposed bridge and this Yarbrough Rapid Transit uptick are related. We want full disclosure. |

Sylvestre Reyes is a gutless coward. Stand for what is right and stop trying to play politics here. We are watching what your left hand is doing while you wave your right one.

Reyes has done this countless times before where he says one thing and then backstabs the person he has committed to publicly.
Certainly a study should be done to find the best place for the proposed bridge; however I think its pathetic how Reyes just eats this stuff up and always tried to make himself look like he's "for the people" when in fact he is just for himself. |

Totally agree. Remember brother, WE put him in office. 2010 will be different. I guarantee it. Get involved and spread the news. There are lots of robots in El Paso. |

All the bridges are already in strategic areas of the city so why don't they just make each and every existing bridge at least 50% bigger and staff them correctly. This should solve most of this issue.
Agree but there is still the need. The last construction of a local bridge is in the sixties. This is almost "50 years ago," and populations and roads have increased many fold. |

The misleading headline for this article in the written newspaper is "Reyes pushes for regional bridge study."
Why? If you only read the headline, you would think that Congressman Reyes supports the City's bridge study. But by reading the article, you find out that Reyes opposes the City's bridge study because it only focuses on the area between the Bridge of the Americas at the Chamizal and the Zaragosa bridge. The headline should have been: "Reyes opposes City's bridge study." The Times is doing everything it can to mislead its readers into supporting the City's bridge study. |
Is El Paso ready to increase taxes to build the infrastructure you talk about. The better solution is more bridges spread from Santa Teresa to Fabens. The ends need it as much as the center of the controversy. We are 50 years behind the times. |
