"Shop local" has been the battle cry for decades as chain stores and a greater product variety lured people from towns like Crosby and Tioga to the next bigger town -- Williston -- ever since a better road than a prairie trail became available.

Natural gas is burned off next to an oil well being drilled at a site near Tioga, N.D., in August.

By the time Norm's new hotel opens, it will have been booked for the next three years, and therein lies an important lesson for any entrepreneur.
