2 days of rain and the village of ruidoso has allowed outdoor smoking again.... all it takes is one flicked cigarette butt and we have fire. instead of sticking by their guns, they are letting the complaing tourists dictate what they do. I understand it's a town fueled by tourism, but won't it be sad when no one can visit because everything has burned to the ground?

Now stop that. The drama is too thick. If the plan was simply to reduce fire danger then the practice of "0 tolerance" with people from out of town with no way to know of the ban would not exist. It made the town so unfriendly I know I have avoided it on 3 occasions for certain.

I wonder how many people are smoking in the car with the kids in the car on the heels of that one. No arguing right or wrong, just existence.

and how many people still lit up despite the 0 tolerance??? i can tell you that i personally told around 40 people last weekend about the $500, no warning, 0 tolerance attitude. about half of them told me in language i won't repeat what i could do with my warning and continued to smoke. of course, when the cops pulled up right next to a few of them, they said they didn't know anything about it. Now, I SMOKE. is it worth a $500 citation to be able to smoke while i walk around... nope sure isn't. and maybe if you were there on a busy weekend and saw the number of fire trucks that go flying by ALL DAY LONG, you would see what i am talking about. and i work in midtown, so, i see the trucks, every weekend, the fire chief eats in the restaurant where i work, so we get updates just about weekly. they have to make the town unfriendly because idiots seem intent on doing stupid things....

oh, and not knowing about the ban... it's posted in just about every friggin window on hot pink paper, along with numerous businesses posting their own signs, and a flashing billboard as you drive into town... there are even signs posted here in alamo describing the bans... so.... also, ignorance is not an excuse, especially when people are telling others that they see smoking and they still continue to smoke.... and the same people would smoke in the cars with their kids even without the bans.... generally people who won't smoke with their kids in the car don't smoke around their kids period.

Instead of all the dramatic arguments like the village burning down off a cigarette use your position of access to the chief and ask how many Incidents with a NFIRS Ignition Factor code of 31 included have occured over any period of years? Then we can have that argument.

Fire fighting courses will teach you that it is very hard to get a fire started by a lit cigarette.
Conditions have to be just right to make a fire but it can happen. They usually ban smoking but do not give out tickets to offenders. Getting into an uproar over cigarette smoking offenders you see is unnecessary. Just warn them of the ban and move on.

6% from smoking. That's enough to warrant a smoking ban within dry forest conditions.

What is 21% from equipment? What kind of equipment?
Equipment that is sometimes at fault for creating wildfires include (but are not limited to) chainsaws, lawnmowers, weedeaters, welding equipment, etc. An ATV off of the road, a car's catalytic converter and a even a tractor can cause a fire if they are out in the brush.

I witness the "Dog" Fire a couple of years ago go from ignition to being "out of control" in 15 minutes. That was caused by a misuse of welding equipment.

Scared the Hell out of me.

And that is precisely what i will do the next time i see him. I can tell you that at least 4 small fires started in the parking area behind where i work. Lucky enough, someone was paying attention and they were able to be put out right away. And yes, a car could of started them. I realize it is difficult to start a fire with just a butt, but they wouldn't enforce the restrictions for no reason at all. With the amount of trash and debris, you could start a fire in the lot with a blown out match. It really wouldn't take much. And the reality is, at this time of year, the winds are higher than usual. Capitan fire spread in no time at all and got dangerously close to the Spencer theater. So, it's not really an exaggeration to say the town could burn. Get enough people doing things that are banned in the same place, with the danger as high as it was, and it could happen a lot faster than you think.

High Rolls Resident was not arguing with you. He supports the smoking ban in the forest.

Actually it's a lot easier than you suggest...but then I apparently received different fire fighter training than you did. The videos I've been shown actually show it happen.

"With the amount of trash and debris, you could start a fire in the lot with a blown out match."

Perhaps an ordinance regarding that ought to come first.
