Get ready for a pile of paper when you vote this summer and fall
You're likely to get a sheaf of papers when you vote this fall in Broward County , as Florida shifts from electronic, touch-screen voting machines to paper ballots.
The ballot won't be as lengthy for the Aug. 26 primary, when supervisors of elections in the state's largest counties make a massive transition in voting equipment.
Broward Supervisor of Elections Brenda Snipes said Wednesday that a typical voter in November can expect to receive ballots that consist of four or five pages - with contests and referendums on both sides of each sheet. That's largely because of the space needed to print proposed amendments to the state Constitution.

North Lauderdale motorcyclist dies, two others hurt in I-95 crash
“When I called 911, I estimated they were doing 95 to 100 miles per hour”
First he heard the screaming whine of the high-powered motorcycle engines, then Craig McLemore saw the bikes whiz by his car, some weaving around other vehicles as they flashed through traffic on Interstate 95 on Thursday morning.
Seconds later, one of the riders lay dead on the pavement in the northbound lanes after his 2006 Honda slammed into the rear of a 2007 Toyota, the Florida Highway Patrol said. Two other riders also crashed just south of Commercial Boulevard, their motorcycles sliding across the pavement, throwing the riders off and injuring one critically. Read more

South Florida, Israeli bonds: Children hook up via Internet
“It's not their friends, but it looks like they made some new ones.”
This message is for Liraz, a 12-year-old student at the Beit YeHoshua school in Nesher, Israel: Your pal Lauren Schwartz, of Tamarac, was eager to see you on Sunday to chat about Hannah Montana and other things, but, you know, the Internet can sometimes do crazy things.
Schwartz, 9, was among fourth-graders from Tamarac's Temple Beth Torah who attended Sunday's Israel60 festival at Nova Southeastern University, and who were set to 'chat' for the first time with Internet pen-pals in Israel. But instead of meeting their friends, because of a computer/scheduling glitch, Schwartz and her classmates caught up with students at other Israeli schools. Read more

Opportunities and risks for renters in Broward and Palm Beach counties
“You've got to do your homework today because sometimes the deal is too good to be true”
Finding a place to rent in Broward and Palm Beach counties is easier and in some cases cheaper than it has been in years because more housing is available and the competition for tenants is lowering prices.
But there are greater risks as well because some of those properties are owned by inexperienced and financially overextended landlords. They bought during the housing boom of 2000 to 2005 with the intention of flipping, but instead are stuck with expensive mortgages.
After soaring by 10 percent to 12 percent in 2006, average rents are basically flat in 2008, with several apartment complexes offering such incentives as a free month's rent or reduced rates. Still, some of the best deals can be found in the growing supply of privately owned houses and condos, real estate analysts say. Read more
