Brunswick foes join in lobbying efforts
It was a low-key beginning for a relatively new friendship when three Brunswick County commissioners joined diners Tuesday at the fourth annual Impact Luncheon of the Brunswick County Association of Realtors.
Commissioners had been invited to the gathering in the past, but never had more than one attended. Last year, none did.
Then, the two groups were at loggerheads over a transfer tax referendum, and almost any conversation that included either a Realtor or a commissioner was sure to settle on what the other group was doing to lobby for or against the transfer tax, which would have assessed a levy on property sales to help build roads. Gun brought to school property

A former law enforcement officer in Brunswick and Columbus counties was arrested on weapons charges at Shallotte Middle School on Thursday afternoon, after he was found with a loaded, concealed handgun and badges to indicate that he was a U.S. marshal.
Perritt Elbert Alford, 43, of 210 Union Lane in Shallotte, was charged with two counts of having a gun on educational property, which is a felony, two counts of carrying a concealed weapon and one count of impersonating a law enforcement officer. He was in jail Friday afternoon. His bail was set at $30,000. Read more
