Inmate captured on Cannery Row committed suicide

SUSANVILLE >> The death of the Carmel Valley man who died Sunday while incarcerated in a maximum-security prison cell in Susanville has been ruled a suicide, a prison spokeswoman said. Enough physical evidence was found in his cell at the California Correctional Center to determine John Collard, 56, had committed suicide, Department of Corrections spokeswoman Chrissy Hackler said.

Just three days after a Ben Lomond Conservation Camp inmate was captured and arrested at a restaurant on Monterey's Cannery Row, he was found dead inside his cell at a Susanville prison, a state prison official said Tuesday. John Collard, a 56-year old from Carmel Valley, was alone in a maximum-security cell at a California Correctional Center prison in Susanville when he was pronounced dead just before 11 a.m. Sunday, Department of Corrections spokeswoman Yvonne Hackler said.
