The Arizona Department of Transportation recently announced that two of its major projects have been nominated for national awards and one of these is in the Superior area.
The Regional Freeway System in the Phoenix metropolitan area and the U.S. 60 Gonzales Pass reconstruction project between Florence Junction and Superior and the Regional Freeway System in the Phoenix metropolitan area have been nominated for the America’s Transportation Awards. The competition recognizes the best transportation projects in the country—projects that are on time, on budget, and demonstrate innovative management.

Superior Sun: Senator McCain Visits Superior & Talks Land Exchange
Resolution Copper is not going to wait forever for the passage of federal land exchange legislation to facilitate its copper mining operation in Arizona.
That was the gist of one point made by Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.) speaking in Superior Monday to a crowd of proponents and some opponents as well of the proposed S. 409, Southeast Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act of 2009.
“It is important,” he said, “it is important if you support this legislation to get active … if you are opposed your voice can be heard as well.”
McCain spoke on the Superior school district campus. He met first with elected and appointed officials in the John F. Kennedy Elementary auditorium. It was a short stroll from there over to Superior Junior-Senior High where a crowd awaited in the school multipurpose room to see the senator and hear what he had to say.

Superior Optimist Club will present the 6 p.m. Independence Day parade down Main Street.
Fireworks will be set off of the mine tailings on the north side of Main Street at approximately 8:30 p.m.

WASHINGTON DC - Various opposed national organizations including members of federally recognized Native American Indian Tribes attended a hearing held on June 17, in Washington, D.C. before the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee and the Subcommittee on Public Lands and Forests to testify regarding the proposed Senate Bill 409.
The Bill is about the proposed Arizona Southeastern Land Exchange which would allow Rio Tinto's Resolution Copper Company (RCC) to get nearly 2,400 acres of land in the midst of Oak Flat on the Tonto National Forest to build an enormous copper mine near Superior. This has been long opposed by the San Carlos Apache Tribe.

Superior Town Council has given the go-ahead for Mayor Michael Hing to accept the invitation of Resolution Copper Mining to travel to Washington, D.C. for the Senate hearing of the Southeast Land Exchange bill (SB 409) on June 17.
The June 4 vote to allow Hing to make the trip was unanimous.

The Resolution deposit, located near Superior, Arizona, may be one of the largest copper resources ever found in North America and possibly worldwide. The ore body rests more than a mile below the surface and appears to be of good grade. In May 2008, Rio Tinto, Resolution Copper's parent company, announced that Resolution Copper had completed sufficient drilling on the deposit to report an Inferred Resource of 1.34 billion tons, containing 1.51 percent copper and 0.040 percent molybdenum.
