County Commission backs rules to save golf courses

Golf courses across Broward County soon could be better protected from being converted into homes and businesses under land-use regulations that received an initial OK from county commissioners on Tuesday. Developers increasingly have eyed private fairways as the last remaining open land where they can build multimillion-dollar projects. But dismayed residents who live near the courses want to preserve the greens and trees and pressed for greater government restrictions. The proposed rules would force developers to offset the loss of open space and recreation caused by building on a golf course - even if it's closed. They'd also have to address how their development would affect the environment and would tie into the surrounding neighborhoods and streets. Read more

Two drown, including 2-year-old, in separate incidents
A 2-year-old boy and a man drowned in separate incidents in Broward County over the weekend, police said.
In Lauderhill on Saturday, little J'mari Johnson got out of a house in the 1100 block of Northwest 45th Avenue and went into the backyard swimming pool. A relative found him in the pool and called 911, police spokesman Lt. Mike Cochran said.
Paramedics rushed to the house and took the boy to Plantation General Hospital, but efforts to revive him failed. He was pronounced dead at the hospital, Cochran said. Read more
