There have been quite a few controversies in town lately that seemed to divide the Sumner community - the threat of criminal charges against council member Randy Hynek , Northstar Chemical and the city opting out of Pierce Transit , to name a few.

The City of Sumner no longer falls within Pierce Transit's boundaries, yet some controversy lingers over whether opting out was the right call.

In 1997 Lake Stevens adopted a curfew ordinance which stated that no one under the age of 18 was allowed on public streets, highways, alleys, parks, vacant lots or any other public place within the city between the hours of 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. during the week and after midnight on weekends, however, this ordinance has since been removed.
