An ambitious effort to get 3,000 Bridgeport residents to register to vote kicked off Wednesday as civic and church officials gathered at the East End Baptist Tabernacle Church to launch the three-year drive.

This is a total violation of seperation of church and state. These voter registration drives are clearly to benefit the Obama campaign. If these were predominantly white churches who were conducting voter registration drives for McCain these same people would be screaming racism...and they know it!Q

White candidates have always used the black church as a opportunity to push their agenda. What better place to advocate participation in the election process. And if they presuade people to register so may even vote for McCain.. but the registration has to occur first.

Except they made it clear this is to benefit Obama which violates a whole bunch of laws if they are non profits. Candidates should not be campaigning in any churches anywhere PERIOD!

Bush had more electoral votes in 2000 and won. He had the popular vote in Florida. He won fair and square against your lame candidate.

The problem with the electoral vote, is that there are based on the states, instead of the people,, In Texas the state automatically goes to a stupid republican, when the majority has not voted that route, and the same for the smaller states, they even get 3 votes and lack the population to support those votes and the electoral vote needs to be abolished anyway,, its primary use has been outdated,, now that media can provide the public with the information of the candidates people no longer need to have someone else voting for,, we know who the candidates are so we can vote without the assist of the electoral vote,, but people like you and your president have deceit as your only means for survival

They need to register those voters because they have the buses that can carry them to the voting booth in November. This reasoning is simple, if it's raining they won't go out and vote...pray for rain!

"He said that he has already assembled a team of 100 volunteers who will focus on the traditionally black churches of both Bridgeport and Stratford, most of which are already IMA members."

What/where are the traditionally black churches in Stratford?

The saddest part is every american over 18 unless a felon has the right to vote. How many people actually vote? Pretty sad. Are these people actually taking time to find out about the candidates - NOT! I CANNOT STAND BEHIND A CANDIDATE THAT CANNOT SALUTE THIS GREAT NATIONS FLAG!!!!!!!!!! This is not a race issue but what is best for this great nation we should be grateful to live in.

GOD BLESS AMERICA AND OUR TROOPS WHO NEED TO COME HOME FROM A USELESS WAR!!!!!!!!!!

In the 50's and 60's we met in churches to discuss strategies. The ministers were eager to have the meetings in their churches, but today it isn't so much that way. You have to make appointments, pay the janitors, check with the church's admistrator to make sure it is ok with the pastor and then there are usually 2 or 3 pastors, so you have to make sure you ask the right minister. One of the worst strikes against the NAACP by the KKK was to bomb a church. There were still disagreements, but usually they were handled with diplomacy. Today there are serious disagreements and sometimes better not to have the meeting in a church.

The only way to change the corrupt politics of Bridgeport (and most of America) is to get people to closely listen to the real issues and vote. Not popularity but vote common sense and vote praying. Most politicians today (notice I left room for those who are truely trying to do the right thing) are looking out for themselves, illegally taxing citizens and creating despair in our communities.

We need a constructive, positive, rising up of people and we need Jesus Christ!

Nonsense! Christians are citizens and have every right to vote, register and protest. It is un-American to suggest otherwise!

Nonsense. Every American president is the history of this country has sought out the vote of church memebers and Christians. Get your fact right before you make such a claim against any presidential candidate!

Oh, EVERYBODY knows THAT. Their self-fulfilling racism prevents them from doing otherwise.

Hats off to the Churches and the NAACP for leadibg the Voter Registration drive. As a naturalized citizen who cast my first vote for Harry Truman in 1948,I know the importance of Voting. It is important that someone or group take the lead to register people to vote.I know for a fact that Elected Officials do not want voter registration. In many instances they want to keep the status quo. It is sad that there are people who are out there critizing this movement,These are the same people who would suppres the right to vote and would probably want to go back to the old days when Blacks and women could not vote in this country.
As a country we have an opportunity to decide who will be the next President of this country.Let's be honest and live the American dream where anyone can be president if he or she meets the qualifications.

And what was Bush's mission in creating the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives?
Anyone who has a problem with this needs to return to the "compassionate conservative" roots their leader espoused in his 2000 campaign.
